Job Overview:

As a Law Clerk at our small estate planning firm, you will play a crucial role in supporting our attorneys and legal team in delivering comprehensive estate planning and elder law services to clients. This position offers an opportunity to gain practical experience in estate planning and elder law while working closely with experienced professionals in a supportive and collaborative environment. You will have the chance to apply your legal knowledge and skills to assist clients in preparing for their future and preserving their legacies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drafting Legal Documents: Assist in drafting a variety of estate planning and elder law documents tailored to the unique needs and goals of clients, such as wills, revocable and irrevocable trusts, advance directives, powers of attorney, and related documents. Ensure accuracy, clarity, and compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

  • Coordinating Medicaid Planning and Applications:  Assist with collecting relevant client information and providing guidance to clients regarding the Medicaid application process.  Assist in drafting related elder law planning documents.  Assist with guiding clients with spenddown strategies.  Coordinating collection of Medicaid verification documents.  Assist in drafting and filing Medicaid applications. 

  • Client Consultation and Communication: Participate in client meetings and consultations alongside attorneys, listening to client concerns, gathering relevant information, and providing assistance in explaining legal concepts and options in a clear and empathetic manner. Maintain clear and professional communication with clients throughout the estate planning or elder law process.

  • Case Coordination: Collaborate with attorneys and staff to manage client caseloads effectively, including tracking deadlines, scheduling appointments, and following up on action items. Maintain detailed and accurate case files, ensuring all relevant information is properly documented and accessible.

  • Legal Research and Analysis: Conduct legal research on matters related to estate planning, including Medicaid planning, wills, trusts, probate, asset protection, and other relevant areas. Analyze statutes, regulations, and case law to provide valuable insights and recommendations to attorneys.

  • Administrative Support: Provide administrative assistance to attorneys, including managing calendars, scheduling appointments, drafting correspondence, and maintaining client databases. Assist with billing, invoicing, and other administrative tasks as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited law school program with a strong academic record.

  • Interest in estate planning, elder law, probate, and related areas of law.

  • Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational abilities.

  • Compassionate and client-focused approach to legal practice.

  • Professional demeanor with effective communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Proficiency in legal research tools and software.

  • Prior experience or coursework in estate planning, elder law, or related areas is preferred but not required.

Working Conditions:

  • This position is based in a professional office environment at our small estate planning firm.

  • Regular office hours with occasional flexibility required to accommodate client needs and deadlines.
